Dr. Friedlin is a family physician, an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine for Indiana University School of Medicine, and a Research Scientist with Regenstrief Institute, Inc. He completed a medical informatics fellowship at Regenstrief in 2008. His research interests data mining, data analysis, and developing natural language processing (NLP) software to automatically identify, extract and encode concepts found in medical documents. His research focus includes using data mining and NLP technology to identify novel patterns, relationships and correlations that exist in medical data, both unstructured as well as structured. He is particularly interested in the use of these methods to improve public health and cancer care. He recently created NLP software to automatically detect microbiology culture reports that are positive for MRSA. Dr. Friedlin has worked to incorporate this software into an automated Notifiable Condition Detector currently in use at Regenstrief to detect reportable conditions in inbound laboratory reports to our health information exchange which are then forwarded to the Indiana State Department of Public Health.
