Dr. Wilson is an Associate Professor, Director of the Geographic Information Science Research Center, and Chair of the Department of Geography at IUPUI. He has expertise in GIS, remote sensing, and spatial analysis of human/environment interaction in health behavior and health outcomes research. Topical focus areas include environmental quality 1–5, physical activity and obesity 6–13, spatial context of health behaviors 14–15, and antibiotic resistant infections 16–17. A primary theme of his work is developing new applications of spatial information technologies in urban public health research. For example, he was among the first researchers to adapt satellite remote sensing measurements from earth and environmental sciences to human behavior and environmental perception studies relating to physical activity and obesity. He also has published on the use GIS technologies in the analysis of antibiotic-resistant infections within hospitals. In a current study he is collaborating with medical and health informatics researchers to identify spatial and temporal patterns of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in communities and inpatient care networks.
