Dr. Overhage is Director of Medical Informatics and a Research Scientist, at Regenstrief Institute, Inc.; and Regenstrief Professor of Medical Informatics, with the Indiana University School of Medicine. He has over twenty years of computing experience including developing one of the earliest commercial object oriented database systems and real-time data acquisition and control systems. He has a long history of developing, implementing and studying clinical information systems in a variety of settings. He co-authored CDC HL7 implementation guides for transmission of laboratory, microbiology, pharmacy and supply orders and chief complaints as public health information using Version 2.3.1 of the HL7 standard. Developing rule-based systems to implement guidelines and protocols has been a major focus of Dr. Overhage's research as well. Using these tools, he has completed a number of large-scale studies examining the impact of healthcare IT on process measures, including costs and patient outcomes in both the clinical and public health domains. Dr. Overhage also serves on the NCVHS advisory panel. His other major research area has been implementation of a regional health information exchange for Indiana. He has created an electronic patient record containing data from many sources including public health, laboratories, pharmacies, and hospitals in central Indiana. Dr. Overhage is also the CEO of the Indiana Health Information Exchange, a not-for-profit corporation created to sustain the health information exchange.
