Physician Office Expansion

Through our promotion efforts including presentations at practice groups and through NewCo's efforts we hope to increase the number of I3 users on an ongoing basis.  Once a practice expresses interest, the change facilitator will visit their practice and assist with setup and training.

Our goal is to have 80% of physicians in the community accessing the system in some way by the end of the second year. Dr. Nancy Lorenzi, the Organization Change Consultant, will visit during Year 2.  She will assist in the development of a needs assessment, pre-test/post-test instrument that will enable the measurement of success factors from the providers perspective.

Geographic Expansion

Through our promotion efforts and through NewCo's initiatives, we expect to create the opportunity to add data from several suburban hospitals to the system.  Once a hospital commits and signs a participant's agreement, we will create HL7 based interfaces to their ADT, laboratory and radiology systems.  The I3 will not have enough resources to map the terminologies from all of these to the standard vocabulary but we expect to identify other funding sources to allow us to accomplish this work.

We consider adding two additional institutional data sources over the course of the I3 project as a benchmark of success.

Promotion and Training

Promotion of I3 will be done in several ways, including the development of a sophisticated web site that will not only offer information about the project and its activities but will also provide on-demand education and support for I3 components.  This web site will be designed by the award winning graphic artists of Visual Media and will be maintained by the Information Systems group of the IUSM Libraries.  Other forms of promotion include the development of publicity brochures, giving grand rounds and lectures at participating hospitals and clinics, and engaging the local media.  Training in the various system components will be ongoing and take several forms.  Classes in the effective use of the I3 front end will be developed by Dr. McGowan in conjunction with the change facilitator. These classes will be offered in a variety of settings, attempting to meet the time constraints of the health care providers.  In addition, specialty classes will be developed and offered by others involved with I3 included the partner libraries.  Finally, the change facilitator will provide training and support. When user's usage falls, we will contact them to determine the reason and attempt to resolve any issues.

Promotion and training are essential to expanded use of the system.  By providing these resources, we hope to expand use to a broader array of providers particularly in the outpatient setting.

The primary longitudinal measure of success for the promotion and training efforts will be the level of usage.  We expect usage to grow continuously over the life of the I3. However, we will use pre-test and post-test methods to evaluate our content delivery as well as a survey of the participants in training about class quality and acceptability.
