Dr. Downs is the Jean and Jerry Bepko Professor, Vice Chair for General Pediatrics and Director of Children’s Health Services Research (CHSR). His research interests include computer-based decision support systems for primary care, expected utility theory, decision analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis.
He received his MD and Master’s Degree in Medical Informatics from Stanford University. He completed an internship and residency in Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill where he also completed a health services research fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.
Dr. Downs was on faculty in Pediatrics at UNC for 10 years where he held joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Public Health. He founded CHSR in 2001. He is an elected fellow in the American College of Medical Informatics, the chair of the project advisory committee for the Child Health Informatics Center at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and a recipient of the AAP Oberst Award for significant contributions to Improving pediatric clinical information systems.
