Geriatrics Fellowship Program
The Department of Medicine and the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics offer a 2-year fellowship in Geriatric Medicine (with an optional third year). Residents who have completed three years of training in internal medicine or family practice and who are board eligible or board certified may apply for the fellowship. Fellows will be trained in clinical geriatrics, research, teaching, and/or administration in preparation for a successful career in academic geriatric medicine. Formal instruction will be provided by a structured curriculum with goals and objectives that will be met by clinical experiences in a variety of settings, didactic seminars to augment the clinical experiences, and seminars in research, teaching and administration. In the first year of training, residents will spend 60% of their time in the clinical arena rotating through diverse settings. These settings include a large general county hospital where an Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit has been in successful operation for over two years; a university-based 250-bed extended care facility; a Veterans Administration medical Center; a house calls program based at the county hospital; and a consultative and primary care ambulatory clinic for frail older adults. In the first year of training, fellows will spend the remaining 30% of their time establishing a research project and 10% of their time in training seminars. In the second year of their training, fellows will have 70% of their time dedicated to research with the remainder for clinical activities. Fellows will have mentorship provided by both clinical and research faculty selected from nationally and internationally recognized clinicians and investigators. After completion of the 2-year training program, fellows will be eligible to take the American Board of Internal Medicine Certification Examination in Geriatric Medicine.
