With medical errors now the third leading cause of death in the United States, it is more important than ever that health information technology be leveraged to work seamlessly within healthcare delivery in order to improve patient safety and care. By embracing data and technology, we can reduce these errors and loss of life. Regenstrief investigators and developers create platforms and tools to investigate clinical decision support interventions such as reminders and suggestions with the purpose of:

Adhering to guideline-based preventive care and therapeutics
Reducing drug-drug interactions
Improving clinical monitoring

These Clinical Decision Support (CDS) improvements in healthcare delivery are aimed at increasing the quality, efficiency, outcomes and cost-effectiveness of care. In our Center for Biomedical Informatics, the goal of our teams is to provide operational decision support to clinicians using Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and other EMR systems during the course of patient care, and to work with those focused on the research infrastructure for decision support, while maintaining the distinction between the operational and research CDS goals.

Current CDS activities include:

Building CPOE-integrated CDS components including rule authoring tool
Implementing a de-identified clinical database for research
Developing a natural language processing platform to support these activities
Employing open source tools to implement a set of graphical tools to model study designs
