Position: Director, Center for Biomedical Informatics at Regenstrief Institute


Co-hire of Regenstrief Institute, Inc. and Indiana University School of Medicine


Regenstrief Institute, Inc. (RI) and the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), are seeking an innovative individual to serve as Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Regenstrief Institute. The Director provides strategic vision, intellectual and academic leadership, and administrative oversight to the Center, and promotes its mission to improve the delivery and outcomes of health care through research in innovative advances in health services.  Along with a university faculty appointment, the Director of this Center reports to the President/CEO of Regenstrief Institute.

The Director oversees 24 academically appointed Regenstrief scientists and 28 associated staff, actively participates in mission-driven academic initiatives, and serves as a member of Regenstrief’s executive leadership council. The qualified candidate who successfully fills this position will have access to Institute and University resources, including administrative and operational support, and biostatistics, data analytics, and informatics cores.

The Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMI) is focused on improving health care through informatics. We develop and apply health information technology solutions to generate knowledge about health, disease and treatment, help clinicians make optimal decisions, empower patients, and inform healthcare policy. To do so, we work on clinical applications, computer-based decision support, data mining, advanced analytics, healthcare information standards, and global health. CBMI developed and advanced one of the nation’s first electronic medical record systems, one of the country’s first computerized provider order entry systems, and a health information exchange which has made Indiana the most health-wired state in the country, as well as a national model for health data exchange. These applications and tools are widely recognized for their roles in improving quality of care, efficiency of healthcare delivery, reducing medical errors, and enhancing patient safety.

In 1972, Dr. Clement McDonald pioneered the first work in what would become the Center for Biomedical Informatics when he and his collaborators developed the Regenstrief Medical Record System, a physician-designed, integrated patient information system in the Wishard Diabetes Clinic. One of the first computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems, Medical Gopher, was implemented in Eskenazi Health (f.k.a. Wishard Hospital) in 1986. These early innovations positioned CBMI to play a leading role in the development of health information systems, tools, and infrastructure.

Qualified candidates from any medicine, informatics or health service specialty are encouraged to apply. A successful candidate would have sufficiently comprehensive knowledge of the domains listed above, to mobilize the future efforts of the Center’s multidisciplinary, collaborative community, and advance interdisciplinary research partnerships across the Institute and the life sciences community within Indiana, including institutions such as:

  • Indiana University (Schools of Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Liberal Arts, Business, Law, and others)
  • Purdue University (School of Communication, Colleges of Pharmacy, Engineering, and Liberal Arts, and others)
  • Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering at Purdue University
  • Regenstrief Institute’s Centers for Aging Research and Health Services Research
  • Indiana University Health
  • Eskenazi Health
  • Local and regional government and community-based organization partners, such as the Indiana State Department of Health

In particular, the Director in this position would engage creatively to address the center’s priorities, including the following:

  • Programmatic opportunities that can support the work of center faculty.
  • Recruitment, mentoring, and training strategies that intersect with, complement, and expand existing research and methodological efforts, with the goal of increasing the impact of Regenstrief’s biomedical informatics research.

The ideal candidate for this Director position is an accomplished researcher, well-established in her or his career, who has considerable experience leading researchers and research teams and executing programmatic initiatives. The Director should demonstrate a commitment to policy-relevant research and be energized by the possibilities of cultivating and sustaining productive relationships with faculty and staff, external research collaborators, funders, operational partners, and other key stakeholders. The Director holds experience leading research in one of the Center’s research focus or other areas of research strategically aligned with imminent challenges for biomedical informatics research: organizing and financing of care, clinical evaluation and outcomes research, monitoring and accountability, clinical decision making, populations and communities, artificial intelligence, data science and analytics and provider and consumer behavior.

We seek a Director who demonstrates innovation, vision, thought leadership, intellectual curiosity, integrity, excellence, and a level of research expertise that is required to lead the collective work of this research community. The Director should have the agility required to shift from discovery to program development to translating and sharing findings, to foster a deeper understanding of key issues in health care, and to pave and illuminate the pathways to achieving better health care for everyone. This is a full-time university position and will remain open until filled, with an expected start date of July 1, 2020.

Requirements: candidates must have all of the following:

  • MD or PhD (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant administrative experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, leadership, and long-range program development
  • Expertise equivalent to an appointment with tenure as an Associate Professor or Professor

  • A history of independent extramural funding
  • Published record of scholarly achievement and scientific productivity
  • Experience mentoring faculty and trainees
  • The skills and vision required to recruit talented scientists, and to cultivate interdisciplinary research
  • Demonstrated expertise in identifying and securing research support from diverse sources such as government or private organizations.
