The statistics are heartbreaking.

The infant mortality rate in the United States ranks 29th among wealthy nations, and Indiana sits at 39th in the U.S. with a rate of almost 8 deaths per 1,000 live births.

WeCare Indiana is committed to reversing this saddening trend. In partnership with the Indiana University (IU) Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, IU Simon Cancer Center, IU Clinical Translational Science Institute IU Health, and state, healthcare, and local organizations, the WeCare initiative is developing community-based solutions.

Together, our team has designed locally-customized short message service (SMS) messaging for our enrollees about healthy living and pregnancy, and infant care. WeCare provides information on local resources such as breastfeeding support, and free or low-cost childbirth and parenting classes, as well as low-cost baby supplies. We serve our communities by providing health coaching to expectant mothers and fathers, and opportunities to identify participants who are food insecure and provide them access to healthy food.

Our goal is to develop a model that can be used to address these health challenges statewide. Together, we can help build healthier communities and reduce infant mortality in Indiana. We can, because WeCare.

One of our most urgent need today is to establish a stable supply of low-cost portable cribs to support safe sleep for infants.
