LOINC® version 2.82 introduces new terminology and technical enhancements to support global data exchange
Regenstrief Institute launched the LOINC® semiannual release. The new release advances global health data interoperability through software enhancements and expanded terminology content.
LOINC version 2.82 makes the standard easier to implement, maintain and translate, while introducing nearly 1,100 new and more than 1,400 updated concepts spanning laboratory testing, clinical care, public health and standardized assessments.
“LOINC 2.82 reflects the rapid evolution of the healthcare ecosystem and our community’s need for clearer, more usable standards,” said Marjorie Rallins, DPM, M.S., executive director of Health Data Standards (HDS) at Regenstrief. “By expanding critical content areas and improving the tools that support implementation and translation, we are strengthening interoperability across global health systems.”
The update introduces technical enhancements that streamline global translation, improve transparency into term structure, and simplify version tracking across releases. Additionally, the release expands terminology in high-impact domains including molecular pathology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, radiology, and health-related social needs, enabling consistent, patient-centered data capture across research and care settings.
Specific highlights of LOINC version 2.82 include:
- Expanded laboratory content in molecular genetics, microbiology, toxicology and multi-gene diagnostic panels
- New clinical concepts for visual field testing, gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, radiology workflows and clinical risk assessment
- New and updated content as part of the ongoing standardization initiative supported by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, ensuring consistent data collection across post-acute care settings
- New standardized survey instruments addressing health-related social needs, discrimination, childhood experiences, neurology and symptom assessment
- A new LOINC Translator Portal, providing a streamlined web-based interface for international translation teams to receive content updates and submit translations more efficiently
- Enhanced LOINC terminology detail pages with a new Part Model view that clearly shows how each term is constructed from standardized components, helping implementers better understand, map and use LOINC concepts in clinical systems
LOINC version 2.82 is available for download from the LOINC website and via LOINC Terminology Service using Health Level Seven (HL7®) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®).
To learn more about these updates and the roadmap for the coming year, register to attend the Spring 2026 LOINC Webinar on Friday, March 13, 2026. This free event is an excellent opportunity to hear directly from the LOINC team and participate in a live Q&A session.
LOINC, short for Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes, is a global standard for health terminology. Created and maintained at Regenstrief, LOINC enables the identification, exchange and collection of data across health systems and is used around the world.

LOINC is a code system available to users’ royalty free. Its long-term funding is supported by U.S. federal agencies and other organizations. HDS at Regenstrief releases updates to LOINC twice per year, in February and August.
About LOINC® from Regenstrief Institute
LOINC® was created in 1994 at Regenstrief Institute to facilitate interoperability in healthcare. There was a growing trend to send clinical data electronically between healthcare entities, a practice that has now become ubiquitous. Today, it contains more than 109,000 concepts for everything from an albumin level to a zygomatic arch X-ray report. For each concept, LOINC contains many other rich details, such as synonyms, units of measure and carefully crafted descriptions.
