Shaun Grannis, M.D., M.S., explains why the COVID vaccine is safe and effective for patients with most common psychiatric disorders.

If I had a patient who had questions about the COVID vaccine and these individuals had a diagnoses of depression, anxiety or mood disorders, and they were wondering if the COVID vaccine was right for them, I think this paper gives us evidence that the vaccine maintains its effectiveness even in the face of the illness, and so would encourage them that it reduces their risk of hospitalization significantly. And so, in particular, there are many people who not only have a psychiatric diagnosis, but of course, folks continue to have cardiac disease, diabetes, etc.
And so, in the face of multiple morbidities, including psychiatric disorders, makes a lot of sense to get that COVID vaccine. And if someone was concerned that their multiple morbidities, including a psychiatric disorder, might reduce the effectiveness, the answer is no, it doesn’t, and that’s good news.
