Peter J. Embí, M.D., M.S., former president and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute, has been appointed director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, he will lead the world’s largest biomedical library and oversee NLM’s efforts to advance biomedical informatics, data science and health information access.
NLM has been an important partner to the Regenstrief Institute for decades, supporting biomedical informatics research and resources that help improve the exchange and use of health data. Among its contributions, NLM has provided longstanding support for the development and maintenance of LOINC®, the international standard for identifying health measurements, observations and documents that is managed by Regenstrief.
Dr. Embí has longstanding connections to organizations in Indiana and beyond through leadership roles at the Regenstrief Institute, Indiana University School of Medicine and IU Health. Prior to joining Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he served as president and CEO of Regenstrief Institute, vice president for Learning Health Systems at IU Health, and professor and associate dean at Indiana University School of Medicine.
