Interim Chief Research Officer

Position Overview

Regenstrief Institute seeks an innovative and collaborative Interim Chief Research Officer (CRO) to help shape the future of its research strategy. This interim role will serve as a 12–18-month trial position to assess and refine the scope and structure of the permanent CRO role. The selected candidate will be a senior research leader with a strong funding track record and expertise aligned with the institute’s mission to improve health and healthcare through research and partnerships. The interim CRO will help guide institutional research priorities, support center directors, grow our funding base, and strengthen relationships across IU, health systems, industry, and government. This is a unique opportunity to shape an evolving leadership position that aligns research innovation with real-world health needs.

Top Responsibilities

  1. Grow and diversify Regenstrief’s funding portfolio
    Identify and support opportunities for large, multi-disciplinary grants (NIH, PCORI, AHRQ, CDC, state, industry, etc.)
    Lead and align grant development strategy with institutional research priorities
    Build capacity to quickly respond to emerging needs from partners that are aligned with our Institute’s mission, such as the state of Indiana, federal agencies, and industry partners
  2. Advance Regenstrief’s strategic partnerships
    Work with the CEO and Director of Research Strategy and Innovation to strengthen relationships with healthcare systems, government, life sciences companies, and community partners
    Support the development of demonstration projects and aligned research collaborations
  3. Drive cross-cutting research initiatives and infrastructure
    Oversee pilot grants and support for center and programmatic research development
    Promote team science across Regenstrief’s Centers and with IU and Indiana CTSI
    Help implement infrastructure to support learning health systems and innovation
  4. Provide scientific leadership and visibility
    Represent Regenstrief at key national forums
    Coordinate internal scientific events (e.g., Sam Regenstrief Distinguished Lecture Series, RI Scientific community meetings, Networking events) with the support of a program manager
  5. Support faculty & staff scientific recruitment and mentoring
    Guide recruitment in key research areas
    Foster cross-disciplinary scientific engagement across the Institute
  6. Promote research dissemination and impact
    Collaborate with PR/Communications to translate and share research for stakeholders
    Ensure visibility of Regenstrief science to influence practice and policy

Candidate Qualifications

MD, PhD, or MD/PhD with active federal research funding
Nationally recognized expertise in health services research, health equity, digital health, or related fields
Experience leading interdisciplinary research teams and securing extramural funding
Strong partnership skills across academic, healthcare, government, and industry sectors
