As we enter a new decade, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare will continue to grow. AI offers exciting opportunities to improve care, but many questions are unanswered about the applications, how they will impact workflow and staffing, how to maximize benefit and minimize harm, and many other unknowns. For decades, Regenstrief research […]
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not a new concept, but a recognition of its potential and the focus on AI is clearly growing across many industries. In healthcare, advances in AI are poised to transform care and the clinician-patient relationship. A few early examples help set the stage for current ground-breaking work and let us look […]
The 2018-19 fiscal year was a banner 12 months for Regenstrief Institute. The annual report, which has been revived after a hiatus, helps us tell our success stories and demonstrates the impact made by Regenstrief investigators. From cover to cover, this summary of our activities is an impressive testament to both the achievements of the […]
The exchange of ideas is vital to advancing healthcare around the globe. Opening dialogues, establishing relationships and partnerships, and sharing expertise help move research forward and promote discovery. This is an environment in which we at Regenstrief Institute excel. Professional meetings offer exceptional and important opportunities to initiate formal and informal, long-term and brief connections. […]
Sadly, Indiana as a state consistently ranks poorly for overall health. While studies vary and there is some discrepancy about Indiana’s actual ranking on several key indicators, there is little disagreement that collectively, as a state, we generally fall toward the bottom in many areas affecting people’s health. For instance, a recent study derived from […]
Regenstrief Institute is celebrating a momentous milestone: our 50th anniversary! Sam Regenstrief, a captain of industry, and his wife Myrtie, established the institute in 1969 with the goal of advancing and improving healthcare.
On average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. The CDC reports U.S. death rates from heroin and prescription opioids remained stable from 2016 to 2017, but this disquieting number of fatalities is unacceptably high. Now, we also collectively face the growing challenge of deaths linked to synthetic opioids. The opioid crisis […]
Regenstrief Institute has an impressive portfolio of research, ranging from invention to implementation. The myriad discoveries, analyses and validations led by our investigators continue to make significant impacts in a wide variety of healthcare environments, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, doctors’ offices, nursing facilities and even homes. I am continuously impressed and inspired by the breadth […]
No institution, no matter how respected, should become complacent. Yet successful organizational change is challenging. Entering its sixth decade, Regenstrief Institute is meeting the demands of advancing its mission head-on. We have established three vice presidencies and recruited individuals who are brilliant in their fields to fill these leadership positions. These highly qualified and forward-looking […]
Editor’s Note: Regenstrief Institute has a growing number of important relationships with industry and corporate partners. This is the second column addressing this topic. Periodic updates, as appropriate, may follow. In my February 20th column, I highlighted the growth of Regenstrief Institute’s vital relationships with corporate partners, including Merck, Roche, Eli Lilly, IBM and the […]
Editor’s Note: Regenstrief Institute has a growing number of important relationships with industry and corporate partners. As such, this column will be the first of two (at least) that will highlight these associations. The second column is planned for Wednesday, March 20, 2019. Medical research that impacts the health of individuals and communities — locally, […]
Regenstrief’s mission is to improve health around the world, and, while asking the right questions, conducting the research and implementation are important, the mission of the institute also requires thought leadership. Our investigators are making their mark on a national scale, influencing policy and pushing for changes to enhance the way healthcare is delivered. Below […]
Health care generates vast amounts of data that have the potential to drive medical research and improve health, but unlocking the power of those data for the greater good is often slow and challenging. To address this, Regenstrief Institute of Indianapolis and MDClone of Israel have formed a partnership that aims to speed access to […]
In my time here, Regenstrief Institute continues to bring a wide spectrum of leadership, content, innovation and talent to the annual AMIA conference, but also to AMIA as an organization and to the global IT community. Considered by many to be the premier biomedical and health informatics organization in the world, AMIA – the American Medical Informatics […]
It will soon be my second anniversary as the president and chief executive officer of Regenstrief Institute. Anniversaries are good opportunities to review our past and talk about the future. One of the aspects I find interesting is how similar this part of our institute’s journey is to that of our founder and namesake, successful Hoosier businessman and innovator, Sam Regenstrief.
Three newly created vice president positions centered around faculty development, research and business development demonstrate a continuation and expansion of Regenstrief's commitment to reshape how our vision is pursued. These positions will leverage our highly regarded strengths and forge stronger collaboration on all fronts.
Susan Hickman, PhD, director of the Indiana University Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute, testified in front of the Indiana Senate Judiciary Committee about the need to update the state’s laws surrounding patient care preferences.
