Regenstrief Institute professionals will join presenters from 35 countries at the MedInfo 2023 conference, July 8-12 in Sydney, Australia.
The biennial conference, organized by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), aims to promote informatics in healthcare, stimulate research and application and advance international cooperation and exchange of knowledge in informatics. The meeting attracts professionals from government, technology, research, healthcare, consulting and education. More than 3,000 participants are expected at this year’s conference.
Regenstrief presenters will cover topics including information and knowledge management, health data science and artificial intelligence and global health informatics. An overview of LOINC®, the international standard for identifying health measurements, observations and documents, developed at Regenstrief Institute, will be presented, highlighting the collaborative efforts LOINC has contributed to solving many critical healthcare data exchange challenges.

The theme of MedInfo 2023 is “The future is accessible,” which will aim to inspire conversation and implement action to collectively build a health sector that is accessible, where data is not locked in silos and where both clinicians and consumers can work together to build digitally enabled healthier lives.
MedInfo was established in 1974. The conference is a prestigious international event that brings together thousands of digital health leaders and practitioners to the forefront of healthcare and is considered a landmark event on the global calendar.

LOINC® was created in 1994 at Regenstrief Institute to facilitate interoperability in healthcare. There was a growing trend to send clinical data electronically between healthcare entities, a practice that has now become ubiquitous. Today, it contains almost 95,000 terms for everything from a serum alpha 1 antitrypsin level to a zygomatic arch X-ray report. For each concept, LOINC contains many other rich details, such as synonyms, units of measure, and carefully crafted descriptions.
