INDIANAPOLIS – Micky Tripathi, PhD, MPP, the national coordinator for health information technology at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, presented “Enabling the 21st Century Digital Infrastructure” at Regenstrief Institute at noon on Wednesday.

Dr. Tripathi’s hour-long presentation had four key areas of focus:

  • Building the digital foundation.
  • Making interoperability easy.
  • Promoting information sharing.
  • Ensuring responsible use of digital information.

During the opening remarks of his presentation, Dr. Tripathi credited past Regenstrief President and Chief Executive Officer and a pioneer in the use of health information technology, Clement McDonald, M.D., saying, “Regenstrief was where I got introduced to health information technology. I didn’t know that much about health information technology and had to learn from Clem, and learning from one of the legendary geniuses in the field, in hindsight, was the privilege of a lifetime.”

Also, as part of his visit, Dr. Tripathi met with Regenstrief leaders to exchange ideas and perspectives on the future of health information technology.

As the national coordinator for health information technology, Dr. Tripathi drives the development of the federal health IT strategy at the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), overseeing policies, standards, programs and investments to advance healthcare technology. He recently led the launch of the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), which established a universal governance, policy and technical floor for nationwide network-to-network health information interoperability.

Dr. Tripathi’s presentation was part of the Regenstrief Educational Insights and Learning Series (REILS) hosted at the Regenstrief building. REILS is a presentation series that brings prominent speakers to Indianapolis to inform and educate.
