Matthew Bair, M.D., M.S., a research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute and professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, has been appointed deputy chief of the Research and Development Service at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.
In his new role, Dr. Bair will help oversee the VA’s research enterprise while continuing to serve as director of the VA Center for Health Information and Communication (CHIC), where he leads research focused on improving care for Veterans through health services research, implementation science and informatics.
Dr. Bair is a nationally recognized physician-scientist whose research focuses on chronic pain management, opioid safety and whole-person care for Veterans. Throughout his career, he has led or co-led dozens of federally funded studies supported by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institutes of Health, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the National Endowment for the Arts.
He currently serves as co-principal investigator of the VA Cooperative Studies Program’s SCEPTER Trial and has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications. He also serves as deputy editor of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, is a member of the VA Health Services Research and Development Scientific Merit Review Board and has served as chair or member of several data safety monitoring boards.
A Veteran himself, Dr. Bair served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a major in 2002.
Beyond his research accomplishments, Dr. Bair is widely recognized for his dedication to mentoring future clinician-scientists. He has mentored dozens of medical students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty members, many of whom have gone on to establish successful, federally funded research careers. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and has received numerous honors, including the Indiana University School of Medicine Trustees’ Teaching Award and recognition as an Outstanding Educator by Indiana University medical students.
