Regenstrief Institute Research Scientist Richard Holden, PhD, M.S., has been appointed to new leadership roles at Indiana University, expanding his impact on faculty development and human-centered health research.
Dr. Holden has been promoted to assistant dean for faculty success and dean’s administrative fellow for organizational strategy at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. In this role, he will lead initiatives to support faculty development, engagement and strategic growth.
Additionally, Dr. Holden has been named the founding director of the Center for Health by Design (CHxD), an interdisciplinary research center supported by the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington. CHxD is dedicated to accelerating the science and impact of human-centered health behavior interventions in high-priority areas. The center fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, supports researchers in securing external funding and drives innovation to advance health and wellness for all.
Dr. Holden is a national leader in the application of human factors engineering and psychology to design and evaluate sociotechnical interventions to improve health and healthcare. Lately, this research has focused on collaborative, multidisciplinary and technology-enabled approaches to care for older adults with chronic conditions, particularly heart failure and dementia.

In addition to his role as a research scientist with the Indiana University Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute, Richard J. Holden, PhD, M.S., is the chief healthcare engineer for the Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science and the Dean’s Eminent Scholar, professor and inaugural chair of the Department of Health and Wellness Design at Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. He is also a professor of medicine at the IU School of Medicine.
