Two Regenstrief Institute research scientists were invited to present their work at nationally recognized grand rounds events, highlighting the Institute’s leadership in public health informatics and geriatric research.
Mayo Clinic
On October 13, 2025, Regenstrief’s Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics, Brian E. Dixon, MPA, PhD, delivered an invited talk at the Mayo Clinic Clinical Informatics Grand Rounds.
His presentation, “Modernizing Public Health Information Systems: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions,” brought together Mayo faculty, clinicians, residents and PhD students.
Dr. Dixon, a professor of biomedical informatics at the Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health, highlighted:
- Regenstrief’s public health informatics research and programmatic work.
- progress of the CDC Public Health Data Modernization Initiative.
- how Regenstrief’s projects align with CDC goals to strengthen U.S. public health data systems.
IMPACT Collaboratory
On October 16, 2025, Regenstrief Research Scientist Kathleen Unroe, M.D., MHA, presented “Building the NEXT STEPs Network” as part of the IMPACT Collaboratory Grand Rounds, a national webinar series focused on embedded pragmatic clinical trials among people living with dementia and their care partners.
Dr. Unroe, a geriatrician and nursing home physician, leads NEXT STEPs, an NIA-funded U24 program designed to advance clinical trials in nursing home settings. Her presentation highlighted the initiative’s role in strengthening infrastructure, improving trial readiness, and accelerating research in long-term care.
Regenstrief Institute researchers continue to be recognized nationally for advancing data-driven public health solutions, improving care delivery for older adults, and leading innovative clinical trials across health systems.
Brian E. Dixon, PhD, MPA
In addition to his role as the director of public health informatics at the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at Indiana University, Brian E. Dixon, PhD, MPA, is the interim director and a research scientist with the Clem McDonald Center for Biomedical Informatics at Regenstrief Institute and a professor of epidemiology at the Fairbanks School of Public Health. He is also an affiliate scientist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Systems Research and Development Center for Health Information and Communication, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.
Kathleen Unroe, M.D., MHA
In addition to being a research scientist with the Indiana University Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute, Kathleen Unroe, M.D., MHA, is a professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine and a practicing geriatrician.
