Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment among patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) has grown rapidly, now covering more than half of Medicare-eligible individuals with ESKD. Early evidence suggests MA enrollees may have lesser access to kidney transplantation — which typically offers superior outcomes, across patient groups — than their peers enrolled in traditional Medicare.
Through an exploratory sequential mixed methods study, we will fill current gaps in our understanding of how MA enrollment and plan characteristics intersect with patient and community factors to influence how patients progress through steps along the pathway to kidney transplantation. The evidence we generate will critically inform insurance choices for patients withESKD, including in low-income and rural communities, and insurance plan payment systems and performance measures, supporting efforts to help all patients with ESKD patients progress toward transplantation.
