Jonathan Cummins

Jonathan Cummins

Jonathan has consistently delivered exceptional value by leveraging his expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract critical insights from clinical notes for numerous researchers. Over the years, he has developed, maintained, and continuously enhanced sophisticated NLP tools, becoming a cornerstone of innovation and reliability. In collaboration with Dr. Joshua Vest and Dr. Katie Allen, Jonathan developed the FORCE (Finding Other Risks & Contexts Electronically) algorithms to extract Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) variables from clinical notes. As part of a strategic initiative, he has deployed these algorithms across all clinical notes in INPC, with validation efforts already yielding promising results. Once fully implemented, and with Andrew’s support, Jonathan plans to integrate the extracted SDOH data back into INPC, enabling researchers to perform cohort selection using this enriched dataset. In addition to his technical accomplishments, Jonathan actively mentors others, preparing them to take on NLP-related projects, and generously offers his expertise to anyone in need. His dedication to excellence, innovation, and mentorship makes him an exemplary member of the team. Jonathan’s consistently outstanding contributions to the organization make him a worthy candidate for the One Regenstrief Award every year.
