Regenstrief researcher Jiang Bian named Fellow of ACTS inaugural cohort

Jiang Bian, PhD, of the Regenstrief Institute has been named a 2026 Fellow of the Association for Clinical and Translational Science (ACTS), recognizing his contributions to clinical and translational science. 

Dr. Bian will be honored at Translational Science 2026, where ACTS will recognize members of its inaugural fellows of ACTS (FACTS) cohort. The FACTS program is a premier membership designation for individuals who have made substantial contributions to and demonstrated service within the clinical and translational science field. 

Dr. Bian serves as chief data scientist at Regenstrief Institute and holds multiple academic appointments at Indiana University. His work focuses on advancing data science and real-world evidence to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes, with a particular emphasis on the use of large-scale health data to inform clinical and population health decision-making. 

He has a diverse background in data harmonization and integration, AI/machine learning, causal AI, natural language processing, ontology development and evaluation and software engineering. Dr. Bian brings extensive experience in developing real-world data infrastructure, informatics tools and systems, as well as applying advanced AI and data science methods to analyze and interpret multimodal clinical and biomedical data. 

This year marks the launch of the FACTS program, with 36 individuals selected from nearly 6,000 ACTS members through a rigorous and competitive application process. The program recognizes leaders whose work reflects the mission of ACTS to advance innovation, team science and community in translational research. 

The Association for Clinical and Translational Science is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to advancing clinical and translational science through research, education, advocacy and mentoring. Its members include leaders, investigators and trainees from academic medical centers, government, industry and philanthropy. 

Jiang Bian, PhD
In addition to his role as a research scientist, Jiang Bian, PhD, holds several leadership positions across Indiana University and its health system. He serves as Chief Data Scientist for both Regenstrief Institute and IU Health and is the Walther and Regenstrief Endowed Chair in Cancer Informatics at the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and Regenstrief Institute. He also serves as Chief Research Information Officer at the cancer center, associate dean for data science at the IU School of Medicine, and Regenstrief Deputy Director of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. In addition, he is professor and vice chair for translational informatics in the department of biostatistics and health data science at the IU School of Medicine.
