Regenstrief Institute scientist named next president and CEO of Regenstrief Foundation

Christopher Callahan, MD

Longtime Regenstrief investigator and former IU Center for Aging Research director will assume Foundation leadership in summer 2027.

Christopher M. Callahan, M.D., MACP, a longtime Regenstrief Institute research scientist and nationally recognized physician-scientist, has been selected as the next president and chief executive officer of the Regenstrief Foundation.

Dr. Callahan will assume the role in summer 2027, succeeding Craig Brater, M.D., who plans to retire from the Foundation at the end of 2027. Drs. Callahan and Brater will work together for six months to support a smooth leadership transition.

“It has been both an honor and a pleasure to work with Craig, and I am deeply grateful for all he has done for the Regenstrief Foundation,” said Dan Appel, chairman of the Regenstrief Foundation Board of Directors. “We are also very fortunate to have Chris follow him as our next president and CEO. I am excited about the leadership Chris will bring and very confident in the Foundation’s future.”

A Regenstrief Institute scientist since 1991, Dr. Callahan has more than 30 years of experience studying clinical interventions and new models of care designed to improve health outcomes. His research began with a focus on late-life depression and dementia and expanded to include multimorbidity, social determinants of health and healthcare delivery for populations facing barriers to care.

As president and CEO of the Regenstrief Foundation, Dr. Callahan will oversee the Foundation’s work supporting research-driven improvements in healthcare systems and health equity. He will work with the Foundation’s board, staff, grantee partners and community organizations to guide its future strategy and impact.

The Regenstrief Foundation and Regenstrief Institute share a history dating to the Institute’s founding in 1969. The Foundation has provided longstanding support for the Institute’s mission to improve health and healthcare through research, innovation and partnerships.

Dr. Brater has served the Regenstrief Foundation since 2013 and as its president since 2020. Following his retirement from the Foundation, he will continue in his role as vice president of programs at the Walther Cancer Foundation.

Dr. Callahan is a research scientist with the Indiana University Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute, professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine and chief research and development officer at Eskenazi Health. He previously served for more than two decades as the founding director of the IU Center for Aging Research.
