The role of informatics and HIT in learning health systems

Regenstrief President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Embí, M.D., M.S., led a discussion as part of a Learning Health System Leaders Webinar Series put on by the Northwest Learning Health Systems Center of Excellence and K12. Dr. Embí discussed how informatics and health information technology (HIT) can be leveraged in learning health systems (LHS).

Dr. Embí shared his personal experience as a patient and explained the ways that informatics could have been used to improve his care and, eventually, the care of others.

The purpose of the series is for participants to hear from leaders in the LHS field about their careers, their vision for the future of the field and advice for researchers who want to make a career in this area.

Dr. Embí is co-leading the LHS Center of Excellence at Regenstrief and Indiana University School of Medicine. The program, funded by the Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ) and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), will produce the next generation of LHS researchers to conduct patient-centered outcomes research and implement the results.
In addition to serving as the president and CEO of Regenstrief Institute, Peter Embí, M.D., M.S. is the Leonard Betley Professor of Medicine and associate dean for informatics and health services research at Indiana University School of Medicine, associate director of informatics with Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and vice president for Learning Health Systems with Indiana University Health.
