Career paths in biomedical informatics: Regenstrief president shares his career journey

Regenstrief President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Embí, M.D., M.S., shared his passion for biomedical informatics as part of a video series highlighting the journeys of graduates from National Library of Medicine T15 training programs.

Dr. Embí enrolled in a fellowship and a master’s program in informatics while completing his residency in internal medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University. His thesis was about the transition from paper-based documents to computer-based records. He went on to Cleveland Clinic for a fellowship in rheumatology while also conducting research in clinical informatics. He stayed in academia at the University of Cincinnati and then at Ohio State University as vice chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics. While at OSU he became the country’s first CRIO — chief research information officer. In 2016, Dr. Embí became president and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute.

Dr. Embí’s video is one of 16 videos from each of the NLM programs showcasing the diversity of the informatics field, the different career options and the meaningful contributions trainees are making.
