Preventing medical errors and adverse events
Unfortunately, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, medical errors have become the third leading cause of death in the United States. Death or injury from medical care itself, while tragic, is often a complex issue for researchers to unravel.
Human error in judgment, insufficient provider skill, and breakdowns in communication in a variety of healthcare settings can directly contribute to the death or injury of a patient, but can be difficult to capture and study. Regenstrief investigators are driven to better understand not only what causes medical errors to occur, but to develop systems which improve the quality and safety of patient care across all settings.
