Dr. Alexia Torke’s research focuses on ethical aspects of medical decision making for older adults, including advance care planning and surrogate decision making for older adults with dementia and other forms of cognitive impairment. She explores the roles of spirituality, ethics and communication in decision making. In addition to appointments at Regenstrief Institute and the Indiana University School of Medicine, she directs the Evans Center for the Integration of Spiritual and Religious Values in Healthcare at IU Health, an Indiana health care system with 18 locations. Dr. Torke received her MD from Indiana University. She completed her residency in primary care-internal medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, then joined its faculty as a clinician-educator. While there she went on to become a faculty fellow in ethics and serve on the Grady Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee. She developed medical student and resident curricula in ethics and end of life care. She completed further training at the University of Chicago through a fellowship in primary care health services research and ethics funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. Dr. Torke’s work has been published in Archives of Internal Medicine/JAMA Internal Medicine, the Journal of General Internal Medicine and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. She has received funding from the National Institute on Aging, the Greenwall Foundation and the John A. Hartford Foundation.
