Dr. Steve Downs’ research is focused at the intersection of decision sciences and computer-based decision support systems with the goal of improving the health of children. He is the Jean and Jerry Bepko Professor, Vice Chair for General Pediatrics, and Founding Director of Children’s Health Services Research (CHSR) at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
He is an elected fellow in the American College of Medical Informatics, former chair of the project advisory committee for the Child Health Informatics Center at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and a recipient of the AAP Oberst Award for significant contributions to improving pediatric clinical information systems.
As Director of the Medicaid Medical Advisory Cabinet, he heads a team with expertise in medicine, health economics, and data analysis to provide guidance in policy development for Indiana’s Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning.
Dr. Downs received his MD and master’s degree in medical informatics from Stanford University. He completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill as well as a health services research fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.
